From award winning filmmmaker and effects guru Grzegor Jonkatys' sumptuously grim vision of the future to Nikita Ovsyanniko's poignant armageddon, we're proud to present these seven slices of the future. Your support goes to creators in this and the next edition of OtherWorlds, ensuring this ongoing series brings us fresh, high quality weirdness.

Otherworlds #1

The following shorts are part of this release:

The Third Letter (Grzegor Jonkatys)

A sumptuously stylized vision of the future city, rich in shades of grey, from the technical genius behind an array of special effects masterpieces like Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Star Trek and Iron Man 2. Amid this maze of heavy architecture, choked air, indifferent flows of the machine-driven day-to-day, one man's nine-to-five takes a k turn when a letter arrives: the third letter - no more reminders. When the cogs of administration are unstoppable, how far would you go to resist the pull toward the place they're dragging you?

Best Director Prize: HollyShorts, Los Angeles, 2010
Best of Show Jury Award: Nevada City Film Festival 2010
Audience Award: Maelstrom Seattle Film Festival 2010
Official Selection: Sitges Film Festival 2010

Perspective (Mehment Can Kocak)

"Have you ever been afraid of your own mirror image?". In the low-lit private space of a dystopian techno-future, the real merges with the virtual, the world of solid things reduced to a sparse stage for the seductive call of sensuous data. And in this place, you, how much of this you is you anymore, when fleshly sense and code collide in every cheap hit you take to relieve the ache of desire? Hard edges soften, sharp distinctions blur .This is your simulation! This is your perspective!

The Return of John Frum (Christian Schlaeffer)

John Frum, Messiah of Polynesian Cargo Cults, returns as an astronaut and businessman to the postindustrial wasteland of the financial-service-economy. Embarking on a "conquest of the useless" things get confused and what begins as a journey becomes a trip beyond the boundaries of so called logic and meaning. Realised in beautifully crafted animation and innovatively rendered background art, the telling of this story is thick with atmosphere and celebrates a renaissance of the unconscious freed from the technocratic shackles of our times.

Dimensional Meltdown (Ofer Pedut)

Sometime in the near future. Three parallel universes. She dies in each one. He cant take the loss. With an unsecured technology that has accidentally made its way to the wider public, they decide to go for a ride to a fourth parallel in which she is still alive - ours. A tale of refracted light, chasing the last flicker of hope for snatching romance from death, through a hall of mirrors darkly.

Candy (Nikita Ovsyannikov)

Most of our mistakes can be fixed with time, but what should we do if we are out of time? Two men at the remote station, halfway between the past and a diminishing future. Two lives, one destiny. A compelling meditation on living your life now, because tomorrow may never happen.

Official selections:

Language: Russian with english subtitles.

Kitty-Kitty (Michael Medaglia)

What picture of the world ahead did we paint for one another? What world did we think would surround us in the morning light after a thousand nights from here? After a hundred? After tomorrow? A film about love, cats and brain parasites, this disturbing short was inspired by Toxoplasmosis: a disease caused by a parasite that is believed to affect up to a third of the world population and a condition that can radically change human behaviour. Forever.

ITD (Framescape)

Charting the course of a low-level assignment for a private security firm, ITD follows Falk's squad on a routine escort mission to a Swedish shipyard located in the Baltic sea. When fate deals the maintenance crew a rough hand, the mission takes a turn that propels the squad well beyond the bounds of routine.

Language: Swedish with English subtitles

Vodo is a great concept, with some fantastic video available, and the Otherworlds compilation is no exception . A couple of notes of a technical nature (I would send these to your developers directly, but you site has no info about how to do that).

This page said "this film is available to stream for free" and "watch now". When I clicked on the "watch now" button, it asked for my email address, and when I gave it, threw an error. So I logged in, and reloaded the page, and clicked the "watch now" button, and it presented me with a .torrent file to download.

So two things Vodo crew. One, downloading to watch is not what "streaming" means. This is misleading, and likely to confuse people. If you used WebTorrent (WebRTC + BitTorrent, like what PeerTube uses), you could actually stream stuff on the web page, while still using BitTorrent swarms to help your streams scale. Two, for downloads, any torrent search site worth its salt offers now magnet links, so users can add the download to our torrent client with a single click. It would be great if you could do the same. Keep up the good work!

I'm poor and was able to rustle up a pittance. If a single person on disability can help a little, maybe a few could rethink supporting these talented artists. Five dollars is not much I'm sure any dollars help, however it would cost more for them to process pennies and dimes than they would make. Everyone be sure to tell your friends and family so maybe they are able to stay afloat.

it was nice nut not of my favourites.

Spotty, but I did like overall. Sci-Fi is not my favorite genre, and it seems to populate this site, but worth the time, that's for sure.

@MATTHEW.ANTONIAZZI: thanks for your feedack. There is a 'donate any amount' option and we do get 10c donations, although support tends to reflect a desire to help cool stuff succeed and while most welcome, there aren't many contributions at this level. We started out by leading with small donation requests but found it didn't have the effect you expect. We're working on the next phase of our platform and will be trialling an approach that aims to address this - watch this space!

make it so people can donate 10 cents. get a million views/ you'll be fine... 5-10-15-25$ is all pretty expensive for "free" movies...think small and big at the same time..these videos are interesting enough that many ppl will watch, and anybody can spare 1-5-10 PENNIES... so then you will have your money, and we will have our free videos.

@Marcis Berzins: I thought exactly the same. The Third Letter, Perspective and Candy were my favourites, too. Those were very touching, special and thought provoking.

Kitty-Kitty had very beautiful camera shots, but the idea was not really one that interested me that much (but I'm sure people who find cats fascinating will love it :) ).

Thanks to everyone who downloaded. If you liked any of the films, you can support the filmmakers by telling you friends about it (twitter, FB, etc).

I really liked three of them:

The Third Letter - amazing visuals and story.
Perspective - very cyberpunk and atmospheric.
Candy - simple and touching.

The rest was not bad either, but those three stands out for me.

Hi there. Any spanish subs?

on February 14, 2012 at 1:52pm

most of them are quite poor even for indie movies. "THE RETURN OF JOHN FRUM" had very good animations and visuals, but the story was (if there actually was one) was too cryptic.

Still, donated $5 just to keep you going.

Spanish subs anywhere?

on January 26, 2012 at 2:40am

"The Third Letter" is really good! Actually had my heart racing while I waited to see what was gonna happen in the end.

ITD was a cool little action flick!

Sorry, but this is some of the worst SciFi I have ever seen. Even for the B-movie format.
