“Sintel” is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film.

This 15 minute film has been realized in the studio of the Amsterdam Blender Institute, by an international team of artists and developers. In addition to that, several crucial technical and creative targets have been realized online, by developers and artists and teams all over the world.

Sintel is extremely well crafted in terms of both plot and production, quite a feat to accomplish in its short running time. Well done!

PS: It's not a criticism exactly, but I do wonder about the title. It's so close to 'wintel'. Unless that was done intentionally, I think that renaming it would be the only thing I'd suggest as an improvement.

The animation was very good. It was slightly stylized for a modestly quirky look. I thought that it was definitely of higher quality than what you'd find on a show like 'Clone Wars'. The textures and hair were very nice. I also liked some of the little touches in the soundtrack- like the crackling of the logs in the fire and the cricket noise while the main characters slept.

Most important of course, was that the animation was highly effective in communicating emotion and did so in the service of a great story. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, but I will say that (despite appearances) it's not really appropriate for very young children. The narrative is classic a tragedy with just a hint at possible redemption at the end.

It affected me emotionally in under 12 and a half minutes. I give it hearty A+!

I want XviD or DivX, so I can instantly stream to my PS3 without having to wait for TVersity to transcode it. I don't think PS3 natively understands either Matroska or Theora.

The plot was interesting but also touching, the grief for killing her own dragon by mistake gave me shivers down my spine. even though the film appeared a bit basic, I believe it is really much work making animated movies realistic, but over all the movie had "It". The movie has great potential to become a real success if it keeps the soul.

What else can i say? I enjoyed it a lot!

Keep up the good work! :)

Great and sad story same time. However you need powerful mediaplayer or PC capable to render large 2K or over 2000pixel wide motion picture.

Stunningly beautiful. I don't know how many times I've watched your (much too short) incredibly detailed animation, but this is one film that won't be deleted from my harddrive in the forseeable future.

Excellent work!

Excellent short film!!. My son is currently completing his Diploma of IT, Multimedia and is working on 3D graphics. I will let him know of this film and the software used to create it. He is probably already familiar with Blender, but he is always interested in seeing other peoples work, it is great to have other creators to inspire him.

Really liked the short. I'm a gamer so there were times where I was waiting to take control to fight the hiker and the dragon. The setups to the action sequences were truly fantastic. Well done!
