The Terror Aboard The Speedwell

Welcome to the future. The remnants of humanity, in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event known only as The Fall, have fled a dying homeworld to seek refuge among the colonies of the solar system.

Two hundred years later a small reconnaissance team returns to survey the surface of the dead world. What they find there not only puts their lives in peril, but also endangers all of humanity.

The Terror Aboard The Speedwell is a sci-fi horror game where victory means surviving a two month trip back to Mars as a deadly creature stalks your spaceship, picking your crew off one by one.

Maybe if you’re smart--and a little lucky--you’ll make it back home with all your limbs intact. Choose poorly and the Speedwell will be your tomb.

Featuring:

*A 50K word branching sci-fi horror story with 60 endings.
*A choice between two protagonists, each with their own unique dialogue and options.
*Heroine. Murderer. Savior. Survivor. Corpse. Coward. Conquerer. What will you become?

Content warning: Suicide, PTSD, and cannibalism are themes explored in The Terror Aboard The Speedwell. Violence, gore, and strong language are also part of the game.

Apex Book of World Sf

The Apex Book of World SF, edited by Lavie Tidhar, features award-winning science fiction and fantasy short stories from Asia, Eastern Europe and around the world.

The world of speculative fiction is expansive; it covers more than one country, one continent, or one culture. Collected here are sixteen stories penned by authors from Thailand, the Philippines, China, Israel, Pakistan, Serbia, Croatia, Malaysia, and other countries across the globe. Each one tells a tale breathtakingly vast and varied, whether caught in the ghosts of the past or entangled in a postmodern age.

Among the spirits, technology, and deep recesses of the human mind, stories abound. Kites sail to the stars, technology transcends physics, and wheels cry out in the night. Memories come and go like fading echoes and a train carries its passengers through more than simple space and time. Dark and bright, beautiful and haunting, the stories herein represent speculative fiction from a sampling of the finest authors from around the world.

"The great thing about Tidhar's collection is that it is full of such masterpieces. You do have to get used to having your mind warped as if by some powerful psychedelic. You'll definitely feel that way after Zoran Zivkovic and his Godot-like explorations. Or after Guy Hassan's thought experiment about the nature of mind and thought. But once you get used to the idea, you can settle in and enjoy the ride." 42SciFi-Fantasy.com

Chainsaw Warrior

An incredibly faithful adaptation of the classic roguelike Boardgame. The dice are virtual, but the equipment, the mechanics – even the gorgeous Brett Ewins card art, which exudes the biopunk stylings of the 80s incarnation of 2000AD. Barring a smaller surface area, the game plays out exactly as it does in its cardboard incarnation. In a gaming culture where the roguelike is most certainly resurgent, this is a fascinating piece of game archaeology – a pre-PC roguelike.

One intriguing survival from the social darwinist 80s is just how hard the game is. Auroch has given in to modernity by including easy and medium difficulty levels, which reduce the level of randomness in the character creation process, leading to a tougher, faster, more lethal and better-equipped warrior. The hard mode – which represents the setting of the original game – is gloriously infuriating.

I Killed Adolf Hitler

Welcome to a strange, violent world in which contract killers are routinely hired to rub out dysfunctional relatives, abusive co-workers, and even just loud neighbours. 'I Killed Adolf Hitler' opens on a note of perverse sexuality and ends with a touching ode to the permanence of true love. Sandwiched in between there's murder, time travel and alternate futures - all brought together with a perfectly logical and yet completely shocking, unexpected climax. Rendered in Jason's trade crisp deadpan style, and augmented by lovely, understated colouring, I Killed Adolf Hitley is an truly marvellous, oddball gem.

The Ware Tetralogy

It starts with Software, where rebel robots bring immortality to their human creator by eating his brain. Software won the first Philip K. Dick Award. In Wetware, the robots decide to start building people—and people get strung out on an insane new drug called merge. This cyberpunk classic garnered a second Philip K. Dick award. By Freeware, the robots have evolved into soft plastic slugs called moldies—and some human “cheeseballs” want to have sex with them. The action redoubles when aliens begin arriving in the form of cosmic rays. And with Realware, the humans and robots reach a higher plateau.
