Guantanamo naval base, "Gitmo", covers forty five square miles of Cuba inside an area under a controversial 'permanent lease' to the United States. Since 2002, the base has become synonymous with its detainment facilities for suspected terrorists. Although Barack Obama has given orders for the detention camp to be closed, the facilities remain open to this day. David Miller's quiet, powerful film is the result of three days the filmmaker spent touring the camps in May 2008 as part of a small group of media representatives allowed there. Although the event was presented as a chance to 'see inside' the working of Guantanamo, it was in fact a carefully staged PR exercise designed to yield predictable, stale, controlled media images.

After making tea for six months in an edit house in London, I got a job working for Hardcash Productions, a small production company that specialises in current affairs and documentaries. I worked as a junior researcher on several films for Channel 4's current affairs strand Dispatches. I then went freelance and worked on films for Broadcasters like the BBC, Channel 4 and Al Jazeera English. I currently find myself involved in numerous interesting projects and developments and I'm very grateful to the VODO team for their support.

Listen guys, I'm an American, and by many international standards I was born in the most redneck, right-wing, media spoonfed part of the country: the Midwest. But not all Americans are brainless dolts who ride around in big trucks and shoot any minority they see. I can't help the history of this country and the completely irrational things that we've done, such as Vietnam, Iraq, ect. But keep in mind that we saved your asses when we didn't want to in the first place in WWI AND WWII. My great-grandfather is a WWI vet, both of my grandfathers and WWII vets. I do my best to keep and open mind, and while stubborn as hell, the majority of us who aren't stuck up the neo-christian right wing ass of Rush Limbaugh are independent thinkers who want to get the fuck out of everyone else's hair and quit policing the fucking world. This is a democracy, one of the first I might add, and while it's true that our government is bloated as hell and rarely listens to what the people have to say, we did just manage to elect a president who is black and has a brain that actually functions. Also, it's nice to have a guy in charge whose first response isn't "let's bomb the hell out of'em, then become diplomatic." We're not stupid, ugly, or morally unjust people for the most part; we just embrace freedom. That's why there're so many looney's over here. Although it's safe to say that, on America's behalf, we all apologize for the past 8 years we put the world through. That was just ignorance at its worst. Peace everyone.

Would Tim McVey be sent to Guantanamo? Or Scott Roeder? Or how about Eric Rudolph?

Keeping them in Guantanamo means you paying for their dedicated health treatment/food/security/staff though tax pay. Isn't it easier and cheaper just to put them in prison? I'm sure their new 'jail-mates' will make things confortable for them in a way that'll keep the public happy.

Sure but 911 was an inside job and the guys who did it are still loose and many of the guys in gitmo are innocent.

Brazil's quite a joke... We are not peaceful, we just have an underfunded army that can barely defend our borders from the cocaine traffic. If a nation is ever intended to be a world power, a strong army is mandatory at least for deterrence.
And yes, Osama and islamist extremists whould love to blow up Brazil too, we are as 'western' as the United States and those lunatics wouldn't care about it, they're not rational.

I would rather keep the jackasses who done the 911 at the World Trade Center in Guantanamo, than have them running free, or maybe send them to you country so they can do the same to you. BORN IN THE USA
