Guantanamo naval base, "Gitmo", covers forty five square miles of Cuba inside an area under a controversial 'permanent lease' to the United States. Since 2002, the base has become synonymous with its detainment facilities for suspected terrorists. Although Barack Obama has given orders for the detention camp to be closed, the facilities remain open to this day. David Miller's quiet, powerful film is the result of three days the filmmaker spent touring the camps in May 2008 as part of a small group of media representatives allowed there. Although the event was presented as a chance to 'see inside' the working of Guantanamo, it was in fact a carefully staged PR exercise designed to yield predictable, stale, controlled media images.

After making tea for six months in an edit house in London, I got a job working for Hardcash Productions, a small production company that specialises in current affairs and documentaries. I worked as a junior researcher on several films for Channel 4's current affairs strand Dispatches. I then went freelance and worked on films for Broadcasters like the BBC, Channel 4 and Al Jazeera English. I currently find myself involved in numerous interesting projects and developments and I'm very grateful to the VODO team for their support.

An interesting watch. As the description states though, it's little more than a staged PR piece... just a little tour for the media.

Welllllll....................I'm only comenting because of Touniquette and his likes. I am so sick to death of hearing the "we came to save your asses in WW1 & WW2" old trash.........I admit I come from a family who has been in the Royal Navy, Merchant Marine, and Trinity House Pilots for over 200yrs, before they actually had those names I admit, but the carrears still existed.
NO one saved Britain.........the Royal Air Force had trashed the Luftwaffe well before the Japs did their sneak attack on Dec 7th '42. The British Secret Service was already decoding the German messaging system by then, the first Enigma machine was passed to the British by a Swedish secretary who simply walked out of the German embassy in Neutral Swedens Geman Embassy, combined with a damaged one we already had from an even more damaged U-Boat (Hollywood isn't history USA, its entertainment that just makes the US look superior so you can all keep on slapping your own backs) there were times when Betchley Heath was decoding german messages before the Germans were. The USA didn't get an Enigma machin until 1944. From the UK point of view you were, and still are a huge Security hole (Wikki-Leaks!!!). All thru the war we told the US what they needed to know for their own safety, and what we thought they couldn't screw up with!!!
Also from messsages between the Japanese and German High Comissions we were aware of the forchcoming liklihood of an attack in late November/early Decemper 1942, and where, and this was passed on to Roosvelt and the forerunners of the CIA/NSA who had two brothers involved who's families have made profits from every US war since then (their family name starts with 'D' and they are also very big names in Haliburton to this day) work it out for yourselves.
The word never got passed on.
Add that to the US ambassador to Great Britain in 1940 advised the same government that "America should not come to the aid of the British as they only have 6 weeks left before they collapse".............this was an ex-bootlegger with connections to the precursor of the IRA who went by the name of Kennedy, father to a couple of famously dead Kennedy's. The IRA as they were then gave great help to the Germans, and after WW2 many ex-SS and Geheim Stats Politszei from many German occupied coutries set up home in Ireland, helped by passports supplied by the Jesuit Order, who the Kennedy father also had heavy connections to. To this day the biggest supplier of school books to the whole of Ireland (not Northern Ireland which is part of the UK) is a printing and publishing house started by a high ranking Nazi/SS member, diceased of course, but never even tried to hide. The company started in 1947.

The point I'm making is YES the finance of the USA was badly needed, and your mass production capabilities...............but for you to think that 'you came to save us' is your usual pumped up USA

Britain wasn't invaded as Hitler was planning to go into Soviet Russia and not only would it be impossible to occupy both Britain and potentially Soviet Russia too but Hitler himself held hope that Britain would actually join him in attacking Soviet Russia. Which if it weren't for the efforts of the British Jewish, Communist, Anarchist and other left wing groups it could have potentially gone ahead (yes, it can happen here).
Read about the Battle of Cable Street and for future reference if anyone "saved our asses in WW2" it was probably the Red Army.

is it too late to disagree or at least call bs? as a geezer, i well my parents distaste for the british effort in the last ww. you were done at dunkirk. when the usa did get engaged, you dictated strategy and here we go to north africa instead of defending london. the most tell point, however, was after the war. germany gets rebuilt, but bomb craters are still visible in liverpool when the beatles are formed.

well I really should read all the posts before I write anything, seems what I had to say had already been said & then some.

Some interesting opinions here & many subjects that are hard to discuss without the emotional & irrational taking over.(sometimes guilty of that myself).

One thing I did want to mention about the WW2 references ,where it is suggested that the axis would have dominated the world if not for US intervention.

This is (as most things are) a complicated issue,it is an easily verifiable fact that many US companies bankrolled the Nazis at the beginning of WW2.
( including the company that George.W.Bush senior's father Prescott Bush was chairman of) so initially the US economy profited from this war & as the power in the US is not so much with the people or even the government really but with those who own the banks, corporations & media outlets, may I suggest the possibility that the timing for America's intervention in WW2 may be more about profit & personal(family,NGO) power than any kind of humanitarian ideology(love of freedom etc). Just a thought.

Who done 911 at the WTC' how old are you, 5?

The people held at Gitmo are terrorist 'suspects' given no right to trail, tortured & for the most part not ever charged with a crime.Who & what constitutes a 'Terrorist' is based on undisclosed supposed 'intelligence' & not open to any scrutiny, making the way Gitmo is run nothing less than fascism.

Is this the price many innocent people have to pay so you can keep your ignorant illusion of freedom & democracy? While the country you live in engages in resource wars, carelessly killing many thousands of innocents just to maintain the flow of cheap oil & keep the dollar afloat.

Buddy you need to wake up & learn to think for yourself, maybe actually read a few books & stop watching Fox news.

Ah and by the way to all those (well-meaning, I'm sure) people who think that the US is out to save the world, please do yourselves a favour and look back a couple of decades to see who it was that trained and armed Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban when they were fighting against the USSR. And the same goes to Iraq when it was at war with USSR-backed Iran. The US is fighting against the monsters it helped create. Or rather the US government is using its former pawns as scarecrows to fuel an ongoing "war against terror". Guantanamo is a part of that same policy of "might makes right". The Taliban and the Hussein regime were definitely dangerous and unjust, but the US seemed to remember that when it could no longer use them as allies. The world is full of tyrants and dictators but when there is no oil or uranium involved then the Western world seems very reluctant to help. Any idea why?

Hats off to you Tourniquette, you make good sense. You are of course right about the 2 World Wars. If it wasn't for the US, the Axis powers would have probably dominated the rest of the world. However, things started going downhill right after Roosevelt died and Truman dropped the 2 A-bombs on Japan. Ever since then the world became a chessboard for 50 years for the USA and the USSR. Now the US is mostly playing solo and they need terrorists, real or imagined, to act as the enemy. That way they can keep selling weapons and exploiting resources almost unchecked. I do know that not all Americans are ignorant of all this and it's good to hear from one of them.

This is unbelievable, what difference is there between this kind of reporting, and a, by the us-govt released report? And what do Haitian wooden fishing boats have to do with these warcrimes? Why are the "US flags" on the uniforms mirrored?(stars on the wrong side)....because it's not the US flag!
