- Arin Crumley @ Susan Buice

- 2005
Arin Crumley has never had a girlfriend, so he goes to the place where he finds everything else; the internet. Stuck in a rut, Susan Buice waits tables hoping to become inspired by life. They decide to meet up with the pretense to only communicate through hand-written notes. They fall in love with this experiment and continue to relate solely through videos, emails, drawings and physical intimacy for the next 4 months. As their lives merge they’re taken on a roller coaster that could have only ever existed in this modern era of digital love.

I got given the DVD of this film only last week - and I've seen it twice already (and the podcasts too). I think its sad, honest (almost to the point of being brutal), and heart warming. Both Arin and Susan come out as sympathetic people, but perhaps because I'm a guy, maybe I relate to Arin a bit more than I can Susan. I can understand Susan's desires and her intuition that the time to enjoy being young is when you're young tho. Good to see that with all their differences and distinctiveness, both Arin and Susan are humble and human enough to keep questioning themselves. So hang in there. As the old saying goes, what goes around comes around. Sometimes it just takes a little more time - years and even decades if you're unlucky - to see it happening.

I just saw the movie and I found it marvellous...
Actually, we're going to project it on the First Free Film Show (http://linuxtour.org/sfd/pre).
Four thumbs up! ;)

an interesting story, though the artsy presentation doesn't do much for it.

The film poster illustrates this film very well with its "flowery monster". The film is both kind of raw and sweet (in a good, non-caries-inducing way). With two such creative and artistic people, this "non-verbal" relationship actually blossoms and takes on a life of its own. This has to be one of the most refreshing takes on the age-old "boy meets girl" theme I've ever seen - truly worth the download (and a donation).
Watching this made me think about - among other things - the importance of the part of "verbal communication" that isn't the words spoken but how they are spoken etc, as well as the dynamics you get in a dialogue. That is, while I feel I got to know the two main characters throughout the film, the lack of dialogue between them created a sort of distance between me and them.
The rapid exchange of handwritten notes might make up for that to some degree, as would - of course - the physical intimacy, but as merely a viewer I really felt as being on the other side of a glass pane. This isn't meant as criticism, just an observation - I enjoy films that make me think in new and different directions.

Saw this on Youtube a few months back. One of the most original documentaries I've ever seen. Close to the heart and brilliant in almost every regard. Well done. :)
