In 2007 the New South Wales government suddenly scrapped a plan to utilise the water in the disused underground train tunnels beneath Sydney. In 2008, chasing rumours of a government cover-up and urban legends surrounding the sudden backflip, investigative journalist Natasha Warner led a crew of four into the underground labyrinth. They went down into the tunnels looking for a story - until the story found them.

This is the film of their harrowing ordeal. With unprecedented access to the recently declassified tapes they shot in the claustrophobic subway tunnels, as well as a series of candid interviews with the survivors, we come face to face with the terrifying truth.

This never before seen footage takes us deep inside the tunnels bringing the darkness to life and capturing the raw fear that threatens to tear the crew apart, leaving each one of them fighting for their lives.

The funds we raise will go toward paying off our talented cast and crew. It is thanks to their understanding, as well as their blood, sweat and tears, that we have been able to forge ahead and not only finish The Tunnel but also put it out for you to watch for free.

Any extra money raised will go toward developing the next project so that we can hopefully keep bringing you more free online content to enjoy.

Distracted Media was established in 2010 by Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey in order to create compelling content, regardless of the medium. After many years of working together on various projects, the like-minded pair established Distracted Media to collaborate on their ideas and develop a cutting edge Australian production company.

The Tunnel is their first feature film, produced under "The 135K Project", born out of the belief that if we stop fighting the peer to peer networks, they could become the biggest revolution we have ever seen in the way we share entertainment and information.

After spending years being frustrated by what they saw as the movie industry's short-sighted and conventional outlook towards the online community, they decided it was time to try something different.

So far The Tunnel has won film festival and internet media awards and managed to combine traditional distribution with peer-to-peer, currently boasting a day-and-date distribution that includes free peer-to-peer, cable television, cinema and DVD with distributors of the calibre of Transmission Films.

So, I heard there was this movie called "The Tunnel" available for free. I thought I'd give it a go - didn't raise my expectations too far. But this must be (by far) the best movie I've ever seen, seriously - not kidding. The acting was awesome, the whole experience watching this movie was way better than most, yeah - most, movies produced and developed by big time companies like universal pictures, FOX and Disney.I'm a big fan of movies using this kind of filming; The Tunnle, Cloverfield, Quarantine etc.Thank you for this movie, I will be buying the "hard-copy".

Saw this one last night and I liked it, good effort!!!

I actually wasn't quite in the mood to watch horror movies and just wanted to have a quick glimpse at this one. And I also thought, well, they'll probably never be able to get the athmosphere like in the "professional" horror movies as they don't have the means and funds for all that. And I had seen a very, very similar movie here in Germany before, "Kill Your Darling", which was also a horror-movie in an underground, which partly liked, partly disliked.

So my expectations for "The Tunnel" weren't that high up.But from the bell-room on, you got me! It was a great idea that the characters were at first totally uncareful and "naive" at first, so pretty much the mood I was in, too. And then due to the strange sounds in the bell-room the characters got more tense - and then I also wanted to know, what the fuck does he hear? I didn't hear anything? And I guess it was a mistake to get closer to the screen and turn up the audio then... ups, I better stop to not start spoilering too much :D. Anyway, after that, I had to remind my self a couple of times to not get too close to the screen or to turn up the audio too much :D.

Anyways, all in all it was very well made: I found the characters very convincing (in a lot of movies here on they just seem very 'artifical' and not beliveable). I especially liked the acting of James Caitllin (Trevor Jonas, the homeless guy) and Bel Deliá (Natasha Warner), very convincing!I also liked the camera shots a lot, the intro as well as the very 'artistic' shots in the tunnel in the beginning were beautiful and great to lull the viewer into a false sense of security. So, thanks a lot for sharing this great movie with the public and giving it a CC licence. A tiny donation is on its way :).

PS: And another question which just came up when I looked at your online-shop. I couldn't see a CC-logo on the cover of the DVD there, is the DVD CC licenced as well, may I lend it to friends for copying or does it have additional material on it which is not CC licenced?

on May 25, 2011 at 7:15pm

Hey T_X - thanks for your comments, I will pass them on to the cast :)

The DVD isn't CC-licensed, as it's not something that is possible yet when dealing with a traditional distributor (which we have here in Australia with Transmission Films and Paramount Home Entertainment).

The only 'officially authorised' version for sharing is the one here on Vodo which has our message embedded in it. Some of the extras are already freely viewable online already via official YouTube channels.

While we're giving away this movie for free, we still need to finish paying for it, and make it a profitable exercise if we're going to try and keep releasing things this way. You can't call it a business or an industry if you need to rely on handouts to survive.

Therefore, we appreciate your comments and your donation - every little bit gets us closer to proving to the establishment that this is a viable way to release content. All the best!

I am a major fan of trapped-style movies like this one. The feel, the sound, the heart and soul of this movie was absolutely astounding. The concept of it all ending on a populated subway platform was an excellent ending, making the viewer almost want to shout out 'your not that far away from the tunnels', with the bewildered look of the travellers, unaware of their proximity to pure horror.

At the rate you guys are going, you're going to put hollywood on the back burner. I can't even name a horror made in the last few years that has the grit and feel of this masterpiece.

I certainly hope the writers and cast consider making a second part to this.

I will say it now, PLEASE further this story in some shape or form.

Having a team of ghost hunters re-enter the tunnels with the aid of the current cast is a possible avenue, among possible others.

Thanks for your kind comments :)

We kinda feel like we might be done with this story for now, but we haven't ruled out another one. We have so many other new ideas!

Would you want to see another first-person 'found-footage' doco, or a more traditional narrative?

OFFF THAAAA HOOOOK!!! I've watch this movie pretty twice..... and seriously......Dont whatch this alone.... if u do... Do it with big full screen full surround.... and believe me... u wont get urself in any tunnels anymore.... Compliments!!!! This is the horrorfilm of the year 2011......

on May 25, 2011 at 5:38am

Why thank you ;)

I hope you had a good freak out!!

Good acting performance and flow, likewise good footage and use of lights and effects. Recommended for casual horror fans. For seasoned horror geeks: Could use a bit more originality in the story. Still better than most of its Hollywood counterparts and good for its genre. (The TV-team chased in pitch black mockumentary genre, that is. )

Looking forward to your next project guys!

on May 25, 2011 at 4:44am

Thanks!! It's a pretty niche sub-genre, it's true!!

on May 24, 2011 at 1:59pm

One of the best Mockumentary / horrors i've ever seen!

The acting is pretty damn good. Takes a little bit to get going but nothing seems forced and it has a good flow overall and has some fresh moments for an indie take on the suspense/horror genre, even though you have seen movies like this before. Has a bit of a Blair Witch feel with some of Quarantine's atmosphere mixed in. Overall i liked it. The quality of this film and the fact thats it free is pretty amazing. Keep it up.

Great movie, the atmosphere reminds me a bit of the last scene of "The Blair Witch Project".
"The Tunnel" is definitely one of the best horror-movies i've ever seen!

on May 22, 2011 at 9:54am

High praise - we're hugely appreciative of your comments. BWP is one of our faves, so to be compared favourably is a HUGE compliment for us.

This really is a great film. The way the story gradually builds tension and pulls the viewer in is excellent. The performances of the leads are next to perfect. Most important of all is that it's really damned scary which is rather important for a horror movie. I'm going to be recommending it to all of my friends, and quite probably random strangers too.

on May 22, 2011 at 9:58am

Random strangers are good!! Thankyou :)

on May 21, 2011 at 10:49am

Just finished watching this with the Missus and we were left breathless. What you were able to accomplish on a shoestring and amidst the already tapped out "found footage" genre is nothing short of remarkable. Fires on all cylinders, hits every mark, and soars above its contemporaries. Not since [REC] has this sort of film shown promise and excellence across the board, and the entire cast and crew are to be applauded for their efforts. The new gold standard, well earned.

on May 22, 2011 at 10:02am

We're overwhelmed with the positive responses!

The new gold standard?! Amazing. Thanks, GRIDBUG.

on May 24, 2011 at 1:11am
