In 2007 the New South Wales government suddenly scrapped a plan to utilise the water in the disused underground train tunnels beneath Sydney. In 2008, chasing rumours of a government cover-up and urban legends surrounding the sudden backflip, investigative journalist Natasha Warner led a crew of four into the underground labyrinth. They went down into the tunnels looking for a story - until the story found them.

This is the film of their harrowing ordeal. With unprecedented access to the recently declassified tapes they shot in the claustrophobic subway tunnels, as well as a series of candid interviews with the survivors, we come face to face with the terrifying truth.

This never before seen footage takes us deep inside the tunnels bringing the darkness to life and capturing the raw fear that threatens to tear the crew apart, leaving each one of them fighting for their lives.

The funds we raise will go toward paying off our talented cast and crew. It is thanks to their understanding, as well as their blood, sweat and tears, that we have been able to forge ahead and not only finish The Tunnel but also put it out for you to watch for free.

Any extra money raised will go toward developing the next project so that we can hopefully keep bringing you more free online content to enjoy.

Distracted Media was established in 2010 by Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey in order to create compelling content, regardless of the medium. After many years of working together on various projects, the like-minded pair established Distracted Media to collaborate on their ideas and develop a cutting edge Australian production company.

The Tunnel is their first feature film, produced under "The 135K Project", born out of the belief that if we stop fighting the peer to peer networks, they could become the biggest revolution we have ever seen in the way we share entertainment and information.

After spending years being frustrated by what they saw as the movie industry's short-sighted and conventional outlook towards the online community, they decided it was time to try something different.

So far The Tunnel has won film festival and internet media awards and managed to combine traditional distribution with peer-to-peer, currently boasting a day-and-date distribution that includes free peer-to-peer, cable television, cinema and DVD with distributors of the calibre of Transmission Films.

The title made me interested, the introduction kept me interested, yet a bit confused but it worked out fine. When they got down to the tunnels it really caught the sense that there where something unknown, and later it really felt like someone, or something, watched them. I enjoyed the difficulties of seeing the evil, and the effects with the camera when they tried to film the creature was good. Thoroughly the movie kept the excitement and I really liked the characters, it was quite easy to understand their feelings and fear.

I liked it a lot!

Keep up the work! :)

Hi there, how do I download this movie and how much is it?

on November 06, 2011 at 5:56am

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and appreciate the use of subtle visuals and audio effects to create the feelings of tension and dread. I have some quibbles with plot devices like giving away who survives, but for me this was not enough to take away from the movie's impact as a whole. I only wish certain scenes (like the scene at the lake's edge where the guard is attacked) had just a bit more illumination or clarity. I definitely like the use of ambiguity in films like this, but sometimes a little bit more of a solid tease can really have a huge impact, especially couple with the overall use of chaotic and ambiguous visuals. Great effort and I look forward to the next one from this group.

Thanks, RML :)

We're working on a few things, one of which is an audience-voted web series - check it out and see what you think!

lol I'm confused is this a documentary/sci-fi? or what is it? O.o

on November 05, 2011 at 4:14am

The tunnel was around during 1991 and before 1991. Apparently the people in the documentary seem to say that at the beginning of the movie the tunnels were underground rail road systems for the time. Seeing as how soldiers were around in 1991 and before 1991, that gives me the impression that a soldier at the time was part of a experiment gone wrong, or a soldier at the time decided he was willing to fight for survival after the war was over.

Oh and yes it is possible for another human to live off of another human...all the things that doctors say about people dying from eating another human is half true. Our body's are immune to more than 80% of viruses...but that all changes once you eat food, and digest medicine made by other humans to destroy your immune system on purpose.

on November 01, 2011 at 10:46pm

WTF was that? It moved like a human, had two eyes and a face. Not only scary but raises some questions of whether its someone just hunting prey of its own kind...

I highly recommend it to everyone, not just another happy end movie.

And I'd found complete Finnish subtitles on

Thanks for the kind words, ROMANCOS! Finnish! Who knew?!

I usually don't like horror films. Most are overly gory and not scary. The Tunnel actually scared me. I wish I could have seen it in the cinema on the big screen - Now that would be an experience. (I watched it on my laptop on an intercity train, and it was still wonderful)

on October 30, 2011 at 2:21pm

Thanks, Mercius!

Rest assured that yes, it's far more effective in a crowded and dark cinema ;)

You'll just have to keep an eye out over at to see if there's a screening coming to a town near you!

I am from Singapore. I downloaded this movie from YouTube two days ago and I watched it in the train. Truly speaking, I screamed in the train, when I saw the train goes past the tunnel.
I have watched many kinds of horror films like; the omen, ring, dark water..etc. But never ever one movie freaked me out like this one!
It's wonderful piece of work! It's like a documentary and it makes people think it really exists!
Can I ask if this thing really exists in Sydney? I am very keen to know.

on October 30, 2011 at 2:19pm

Thanks, Michelle! The story was very much set in real locations under Sydney, and the water recycling story is also based on fact.

Probably the best indie movie I have ever seen. Nothing less, nothing more.

on October 22, 2011 at 5:38am

In a world of Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, that's nothing short of a HUGE compliment. Thanks!

Be sure and tell your friends - we want to crack that elusive 1 million download mark ;)

Enjoyed the movie very much!!
Had a doubt whether this incident was real or not!
Thanks to everyone who gave us one hell of a thriller!!

You're so very welcome :)

I watched this movie tonight with my partner before she went home as my brother has been saying how much he wants to go to the tunnels after watching it because we enjoy doing all these haunted spooky places... Well 3/4 into it we had our ears blocked and eyes covered. I took protection outside to walk her to her car then ran inside.. Haha. This is an amazing movie and deserves to be known of by everyone. The cast was amazing and it wasnt poor acting. I actually thought it was all real, not one acted bit.. Ill be sleeping with a teddy tonight as this would have to be the best movie ive ever watched. Ill be passing this site onto my friends. Congratulations to the all the crew of this movie. Its people like yous who make it wortg buying a tv .. :)

Gidday. I'v just finished watching the movie and was VERY impressed! To be honest I knew nothing of this movie before downloading it (even the unique way you guys released it. top notch) and I made my way here on accident trying to find out if this was based on true events or not. For a movie to make a skeptical bastard like me do that is again very impressive :)

I think sequel could easily work and I say go for it. You could do a back-story on the cultist's origin/motives or just a simple continuation (police and government finally get involved, must exterminate + twist and cover up etc). If you need any help with ideas let me know hahah ;D

Well done and Congratulations!

Thanks, Mark!

Glad you enjoyed the movie :)

In recent years, we on Long Island (New York) have had a wave of "urban explorers" armed with consumer-grade video camcorders going into abandoned buildings and recording all that they'd see (the most famous / infamous example involved a large psychiatric centre in Kings Park, which now seems to be one of the few things the town is known for having). I wonder how many decay fans would still want to risk it in the ruins once they see The Tunnel. As for me, colour me very impressed.

on September 22, 2011 at 6:28pm

Thanks! Your comments mean a lot.

We've seen some of the urban exploration that has been put online from NY. Might be fertile ground for us to make a sequel ;)

on September 13, 2011 at 3:03pm

What a great movie. I don't usually find horror movies scary but that definitely had some truly creepy moments. It was pretty realistic too, it felt like I was watching an episode of Australian Stories or one of those types of shows. My mother told me that as a teenager she used to go down into some of those tunnels with her friends to have a look around. After watching this I don't know if I could do the same. It's definitely a side of my hometown that is rarely seen. I've already put in an order for the DVD from my local Sanity.

A few questions. Are you planning on a sequel or have you not thought that far ahead yet? Any plans for a Blu-ray release as it looks fantastic in HD? Is there a backstory for the "thing"? What is it - human? Demonic?

on September 22, 2011 at 6:26pm

We're hoping to be able to justify a blu-ray sometime soon :)

And there IS a next ;)

I like it, I actually got scared.

However, the security cameras aren't that realistic-like.

I downloaded this for free and will donate $50 in the hope that you can make a future project really work. Basically the movie is a piece of shit. It is not scary. It is full of people running down tunnels. Yes narrow tunnels are scary. but too many of them get boring. This is why in old horror movies they release the bats. Try to work with the writers in Australia who can do really scary stuff. Read Paul Haines.
